Telluride, Colorado

I spent a couple of days this week in Telluride. I have been around the area in Silverton and Durango during a summer motorcycle trip, which is far different than heading there in January.  Beyond the bustling downtown shops, dramatic mountain views and access to world class skiing, Telluride is a place of historical significance.

The town has a rich history, originally established as a mining camp in the 1870’s, following the discovery of gold and silver in the San Juan Mountains. The town boomed as part of the Colorado Silver Rush, attracting fortune seekers and becoming an essential hub for mining operations.

It is also the site of the very first robbery by Western legend Butch Cassidy.  On June 24, 1889, Cassidy and his gang stole around $24,000 — a that time — from the San Miguel Valley Bank, marking the beginning of his career as one of the Wild West’s most famous outlaws.

And, Telluride is also a place of tech innovation?  Really?  Yes, really. Telluride became a landmark in technological history when it became the first town in the world to have an alternating current (AC) power system in the 1890’s.

Amazing sites, shopping, and landmarks.  Check out The Butcher & Baker Cafe when you are there. Great eats anytime of the day — and excellent coffee drinks.
