Last Evening at the University of Pikeville
Last evening I had the opportunity to keynote the opening faculty session at the University of Pikeville. I spoke about the future of education in an age of artificial intelligence—how AI will not only change how we teach and learn but also challenge the very viability of some higher education institutions. My core message: some universities will become obsolete if they fail to adapt, but those that lean into transformation—personal, cultural, and regional—have the chance to lead.

The Future of Higher Education in an AI Age
We are living through a generational shift in education. AI and adaptive learning systems are no longer futuristic ideas; they are here now, reshaping how knowledge is created, assessed, and applied. Institutions that wait on the sidelines may not survive. But for nimble, mission-driven universities, the opportunity is enormous. They can harness these tools not just to remain relevant, but to become leaders in creating new educational models.

Why Pikeville Matters
The University of Pikeville is one of those rare institutions that stands in the gap. In the heart of Central Appalachia, UPIKE has embraced its role as a transformational force for the region. Consider just a few examples:
xxx
- Healthcare Access: Through its Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine and Kentucky College of Optometry, UPIKE trains doctors and vision specialists committed to serving rural communities. Nearly 70% of medical graduates go into primary care, and many stay in Appalachia—helping close gaps in access that otherwise persist.
- Economic Engine: The university contributes more than $128 million annually to Kentucky’s economy, supporting thousands of jobs and energizing the downtown Pikeville community.
- Innovation Hub: With initiatives like the Ag-Tech Innovation Center of Excellence, UPIKE is catalyzing new industries—bringing agriculture technology, research, and entrepreneurship into a region historically tied to coal and energy.
- Community Transformation: From civic leadership programs to outreach clinics that serve hundreds of patients each week, the university has proven that education is not confined to classrooms—it is about transforming lives and communities.

A Distinctive Opportunity
In my keynote, I argued that higher education is now dividing into three types of institutions:
- Elite, well-resourced brands that maintain traditional models.
- Innovative, tech-embracing disruptors that expand access and lower cost.
- Experientially-rich, place-based universities that transform lives by leveraging their distinctive settings.
The University of Pikeville has the chance to uniquely bridge categories two and three. By embracing technology-driven innovation while staying deeply grounded in Appalachia’s cultural and social fabric, it can lead—not just survive—in the decades to come.

Final Reflection
The future of education is not only about technology. It’s about transformation—of students, communities, and entire regions. That is the business UPIKE is in, and it is why I believe small, regional universities like it are uniquely positioned to thrive in the world ahead.
As I reminded the faculty last night: transformation is your core business, and relationships are your currency. That combination, in Appalachia and beyond, is powerful enough to write the next chapter of higher education.
