Dissension Fatigue: A Call for Education to Lead in a Divided World
In today’s world, dissension fatigue is all too real. My travels across the country – and the globe – show me that people are exhausted by relentless polarization, the constant barrage of election cycles, and the overwhelming scale of environmental and humanitarian crises. It is as though society is collectively weary, not just of the issues themselves but of the growing sense of division and animosity that seems to pervade every corner of modern life.
As cultures fracture under the weight of these challenges, it is crucial that education steps forward as a beacon of hope. Education has always been the great equalizer, a field where knowledge and understanding have the power to bridge divides. But now, more than ever, education must take on the added responsibility of fostering unity, empathy and collaboration.
Schools, universities, and learning institutions must rise above the noise, cultivating environments where diverse ideas are not only tolerated but celebrated. Beyond teaching facts, they must model how to engage in respectful discourse, how to find common ground, and how to work together for the greater good. This approach to education, which emphasizes critical thinking, compassion, and cooperation, can offer the world what it desperately needs: hope and solutions that unite rather than divide.
In the face of dissension fatigue, education is our way forward—an industry that must illuminate the path to a brighter, more connected future.
