Introducing the ISA Strategy Studio
We have spent the last several months writing about the pressures reshaping private education. Closures that were not sudden, even when they felt that way. Boards operating without enough strategic altitude. Financial models built for a market that no longer exists. AI, governance, and finance converging into a single test of institutional capacity.
We were not writing about those things because they were interesting. We were writing about them because we kept seeing the same pattern in the room, engagement after engagement.
The schools and colleges struggling most were rarely short on commitment. They were rarely short on mission. What they were short on was something harder to name and even harder to build: the capacity of their senior leadership and governance team to see clearly, think together, and move before circumstances forced their hand.
We are launching the ISA Strategy Studio as a dedicated effort to bridge that critical gap.
What the Studio Is
The ISA Strategy Studio is a board and senior-leader strategic advisory experience for the next era of education. It is not a strategic plan. It is not a retreat. It is not a one-time presentation followed by a binder no one opens again.
It is a sustained, principal-led engagement designed to do something plans cannot do on their own: build the strategic capacity of the people responsible for the institution’s future.
The purpose of the Studio is to help senior executive teams and boards develop the pattern recognition, strategic discourse, and generative thinking required to sustain and thrive in a new era of education.
Every word in that sentence is doing work, so it is worth unpacking.
- Pattern recognition is the ability to see market misalignment, governance drift, and financial fragility before they harden into crisis. Most closures do not begin with a single bad year. They begin with a pattern that leadership was too close to see, or too busy to name. The Studio trains leaders and boards to read those patterns early, while there is still room to choose rather than react.
- Strategic discourse is the quality of conversation an institution is capable of having with itself. Many boards can discuss budget variance fluently and struggle to discuss whether the institution’s market has fundamentally changed. The Studio raises the level of that conversation, replacing polite dashboard reviews with the harder, more honest exchange strategic moments require.
- Generative thinking is the capacity to imagine futures the institution has not yet lived, rather than defending the one it has always known. This is the difference between a board that asks, “How do we protect what we have?” and one that asks, “What does the future require us to become?” Only the second question leads anywhere useful.
Put simply, the Studio does not hand a school or college a plan. It builds the muscle to keep making good strategic choices long after our engagement ends.
Why Now
We wrote recently that strategy is not a document, it is an institution’s capacity to move. That idea has only become more urgent.
- AI is not a policy question. It is a question about the future value proposition of education itself.
- Governance is not a matter of careful oversight. It is a matter of whether boards can operate at the right hover height, close enough to understand the terrain and high enough to see the horizon.
- Financial sustainability is not a matter of tighter budgeting. It is a matter of whether mission, market, and money are actually aligned, or only appear to be in years when nothing goes wrong.
These are not three separate committee assignments. They are three expressions of the same underlying test: does this institution’s leadership have the strategic capacity to move?
Most schools and colleges will not fail that test because they lack good people. They will struggle because their senior teams and boards have never had the sustained space, structure, or discipline to build that capacity together. Everyone is in the room for the meeting. Almost no one is building muscle between meetings.
Who the Studio Is For
The Studio is built for heads of school, presidents, senior leadership teams, and boards who sense that the moment in front of them is different from the moments before it, and who want more than another strategic plan to meet it.
It is for institutions that are not yet in crisis and intend to keep it that way. The best time to build strategic capacity is before the market forces the conversation, not after.
The ISA Strategy Studio is a natural extension of the work we already do brought together into a single, sustained, principal-led experience focused specifically on the senior lever of the institution: the people whose judgment ultimately determines whether the institution sustains or thrives.
The Work Ahead
We do not believe the institutions that come through this era well will be the ones with the strongest brands or the longest histories. We believe they will be the ones whose leaders and boards built, deliberately and early, the pattern recognition to see clearly, the discourse to think well together, and the generative capacity to imagine a future worth moving toward.
That is the work of the ISA Strategy Studio. If you lead or govern an institution and sense that this is the moment to build that capacity rather than simply plan around its absence, we would welcome the conversation.
